Ohio AIDS Coalition expands to northeast Ohio
by Sarah Sobel
If you're familiar with Healing Weekends and the Annual Leadership Conference, you know we're talking about the Ohio AIDS Coalition. The Ohio AIDS Coalition is a statewide membership organization providing education, leadership training, advocacy, and support for people living with HIV and AIDS.
Until recently, OAC had one office loIcated in Columbus. With the increase in Ohio's Ryan White Part B funds, the agency was able to expand their staff and offices.
In October, the Ohio AIDS Coalition gained two new staff members: Sarah Sobel as client outreach coordinator, and Bill Arnold as program specialist. Arnold will remain in the Columbus office with director of programming Tyler TerMeer and executive director Kevin Sullivan. Sobel will staff OAC's new Cleveland office, which is located at the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland. To reach the new Cleveland office, call 216-881-7418.
In the upcoming year, OAC is focusing its efforts on provider recruitment around the state, increasing consumer involvement and participation at local planning bodies, and creating new community forums based on need, as well as its normal slate of programming and legislative efforts.
As part of the initiative to increase consumer involvement, OAC is hosting consumer focus groups to determine the immediate and long-term policy concerns of people living with HIV. The pilot focus group will be held in Cleveland on December 4. The second focus group will be held in Akron on December 5 from 11 am to 1 pm.
There are still spots available for the Akron area focus group, but an RSVP is required. For more information about the focus groups, call 800-225-5554.
Sarah Sobel is the client outreach coordinator for the Ohio AIDS Coalition's new Northeast Ohio office.
